“The Good Lord always takes care of us.” That is a phrase I heard my late Grandfather say countless times throughout my life. When something wonderful happened, “The Good Lord always takes care of us.” When something terrible happened, “The Good Lord always takes care of us.” No matter the situation, that was his go-to response for any type of news, good or bad. My Grandfather wasn’t an overly emotional man. He would just matter-of-factly state, “The Good Lord always takes care of us.”
That phrase has been engrained in my memory throughout my whole life, and I find myself using it more and more as I grow older. It’s simple, yet so deeply meaningful. Looking back, I understand the reason that my Grandfather was able to utter the same phrase in all circumstances. Because of his unwavering faith in God, he was confident that all things would work out for the best, in the good times and the bad times alike.
Consider this passage from Paul’s letter to the Philippians: “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” -Philippians 4:12-13
In this sin-filled earth, we are not promised a life of ease. Bad things happen every day, things that are beyond our control, and we may feel sad, angry, discouraged, or a bit hopeless at times. But if our trust is in God our maker, and if our hope is in Jesus Christ our savior, we can find peace in every circumstance. True contentment can be found when we accept that God is in control of every aspect of our lives, and everything that happens to us is part of his divine and perfect plan. When we truly put our trust in God alone, no matter what this life may bring, we are free to say with confidence… “The Good Lord always takes care of us!”
