Everyday Discipleship

“Anyone who does not carry their cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.” (Luke 14)

Discipleship is not a burden—it is a life given to Christ in faith. Luther reminds us that our good works do not save us, but faith in Christ frees us to live according to His will. Even in busy seasons (like when caring for a newborn!), we can follow Him in joyful, practical ways—through our daily tasks, relationships, and responsibilities.

A quiet moment of prayer in the morning, singing a lullaby to a child, washing a load of laundry, putting another meal on the table, and rocking a baby to sleep—these are all ways of “carrying your cross” and living out your God-given vocations. Our most important discipleship happens right in the context of everyday life. The Holy Spirit strengthens our faith, forms Christlike love in us, and enables us to share it freely with those around us.

In the most ordinary routines, Christ is present, guiding our steps and giving divine purpose to even the smallest of tasks. Our daily lives become a place to experience His grace, love others well, and grow as His disciples. Jesus already bore the heavy load on His cross at Calvary; the yoke He gently shares with us is easy, and the burden is light. Our loving Lord supplies us with just enough strength to meet the tasks of each new day. When viewed through the lens of Jesus’ cross, discipleship is a truly joyful business.
